Driver’s License
If moving to Dickson County from out of state, there is a 30-day period after you have established residence to get your new drivers license. If your former license is valid, you will have to take an eye test to receive a new license. If your license is expired by more than six months, you will have to take the full test. The test for a commercial license will be more extensive.

If moving from within the state, you have 10 days to notify the department of your new address. The telephone number at the main office is (615) 741-3954; or you can go to the local testing center and fill out a change of information card. The change will go on record, but you keep the same license.

If you wish to show the address change on your current license, you may apply for a duplicate for a new license and new photo card.

The local testing center can give the commercial written test, but not the road test.

Students up to the age of 18 must show a truancy form signed by the attendance director dated within the last 30 days to receive a driver’s license. Drivers ages 16-17 must hold their driving permit for three months or have completed driver education school before application.

If you have a name change, you must have a legal document supporting the change.

If there is a change of address for any reason, go to the testing center and fill out a change of address form.

In addition to driver’s services, the testing center has applications for handgun permits. That office does not issue handgun permits.

If you are moving from another city in Tennessee, a renewal form and your current address is required to renew your license.

If moving from out of state, a certificate of title is required. If you do not have it, bring the registration from the previous state with the complete name and address of the lien holder.

As soon as you become a resident of resident of Tennessee, you must purchase Tennessee tags.

The county wheel tax sticker is $60.00.

A combination of county wheel tax sticker, license plate and title application is $94.50. The renewal cost for tag & title is $84.00.

Voter Registration

Register to vote in Charlotte at the Election Office on the Court Square. Because of the Motor Voter Bill passed in January 1995, residents can now also register to vote at public assistance agencies like the library, the Department of Human Services or the Driver’s License Testing Center.

Marriage

To obtain a marriage license in Tennessee, both parties must appear together at the county courthouse. Both must have proof that they are at least 18 years old. Acceptable proof includes a driver’s license, state-issued birth certificate or passport, and a social security card..

No blood tests are required and there is no waiting period in Tennessee, once you have the license, which is valid for 30 days. If one of the parties is under the age of 18, he or she must be accompanied by parents. Anyone under age 16 is not allowed to be married in Tennessee without a court order.

The fee for a marriage license is $33 with four hours (minimum) of counseling and must be paid for in cash at the time of issuance. You must have a notarized form stating you have had the counseling requirements. The cost of the license without counseling is $93.00. If under the age of 18 and parents are divorced, if only one parent is present they must have proof of sole custody and the parent must have a picture id.
